These polearms, each dedicated to a specific monarch, tell the story of European rivalry and remind us of some of the exceptional people whose lot, or ambition, was to rule the people of Europe. By Robert Miller Celebrating Jubilees – Gifts in the Royal Collection Jubilees have always been considered a time for national celebrations, and since the Golden Jubilee of George III in 1810 gifts have been presented to the monarch. This article will look at just a few of the varied and exotic works of art which survive in the Royal Collection from works of art by Fabergé, inlaid Indian boxes, diamond-mounted gold boxes and works of sculpture and silver, as well as the increasing number of home-made gifts presented in recent years. By Kathryn Jones, Curator of Decorative Arts, The Royal Collection British Marine Watercolours - The Great Period British Marine watercolour painting has its origins in the work of the Van de Veldes, father and son, who came to England in 1673 to work for Charles II. Whilst a meticulous attention to detail of shipping was the hallmark of the father, the son showed that aerial perspective and the play of light on water, together with a sense of movement, was an essential feature of successful marine art. Their work provided the legacy for the genre as a whole and this article will chart the subsequent history of this art form through to the 19th century, highlighting the artists’ impressive sea-faring knowledge as well as their artist skill.
