Susan Stuart, furniture historian and lecturer, an honorary Research Fellow at Lancaster University, will outline the development of Gillow’s furniture and assess the influence of other designers such as Thomas Chippendale on this famous firm. Susan Stuart is author of a definitive two volume book on Gillows from 1730-1840 (to be published by Antique Collectors’ Club, Spring 2008)

The Art of Drinking, with Philippa Glanville (Event C)

Friday 7 March at 11.00am

Philippa Glanville, Senior Research Fellow at the V&A, and author of the newly published V&A title The Art of Drinking, will discuss our long relationship with alcohol, and how new drinks triggered new objects, from tumbler cups for spirits, caudle cups for winter warmers or cordial glasses for home-made wines, to cocktail glasses.
