Michael Naxton, Curator of the Ashcroft Collection of Gallantry Awards will be giving a talk on 'The Lord Ashcroft Medal Collection: One Man's Passion For Bravery' at 11 am on March 28th. Lord Ashcroft purchased his first Victoria Cross (VC) in 1986 and his first Special Forces' award, the Distinguished Service Medal bestowed on Corporal Bill Sparks, Royal Marines, for his part in the 'Cockleshell Heroes' raid of 1942, two years later.
Thereafter, many similar medals were acquired, with the result that Lord Ashcroft has created the world's largest collection of 164 VCs from its institution in 1856 to modern times. The Ashcroft VC Collection is housed in the Imperial War Museum, but the Special Forces' awards have not yet been seen in public. The Curator of the Schroder Collection, Deborah Lambert, will be giving a talk on 'The Schroder Collection: A Family Affair' on March 24th at 11am. Assembled over four generations of the family, the Schroder Collection could more accurately be called a ‘collection of collections’. The magnificent early European silver is well known, but this talk, together with items in the BADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair’s loan exhibition, will introduce works from these ‘collections’ that have rarely, if ever, been seen in public.
