At each BADA Fair there is an exciting programme of talks and events. The programme for the 2013 BADA Fair will be confirmed in the Autumn 2012. Below are details of the 2012 events which give an impression of the range of subjects the programme aims to cover. Event A: Thursday 22 March at 11am The House & Garden Style Report: the major interior and decorating trends of 2012. With Carole Annett, Commercial Retail Editor and Julia Page, Retail Editor, House & Garden House & Garden has had its finger firmly on the pulse of decorating style for over 63 years. Come and hear about the design trends for this year, including ideas on using antiques in a modern setting, plus a look forward to what will be the must-have items of the future. The talk will be illustrated with inspirational images from within the glossy pages of House & Garden. Event B: Friday 23 March at 11am Country Life and the English Country House: the story of an unusual partnership. With John Goodall, Architectural Editor, Country Life Since its very beginning, Country Life has photographed and recorded England’s country houses. This impressive archive now provides key information on lost buildings and to contemporary restoration projects. The Country Life story is one that educates and fascinates, and this talk will chart the magazine’s important role in simultaneously providing accurate historical evidence as well as influencing the changing tastes of country house owners today. Event C: Monday 26 March at 11am ‘A covetous and greedy fellow.’ Canaletto and the British. With Colin Wiggins, Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery The British have a long standing love affair with Venice. It was a vital destination for the young 18th century milordi on their Grand Tours and a painting or two by Canaletto was an essential souvenir. This talk will look at some of Canaletto’s most prized paintings, comparing them with views of the same scenes today, and will discuss why Venice is still a top destination for today’s Grand Tourists. Colin Wiggins hosts cultural tours to Venice, Milan and Florence aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. www.orient-express.com/nationalgallery. Event D: Tuesday 27 March at 11am ‘Royal Protection and Modern Collecting' With Robert Miller A talk on the design, manufacture and use of Royal Halberds from their evolution from fighting weapons to the pageantry of the Royal Courts of Renaissance Europe. Referring to items in the loan exhibition Robert Miller will discuss the rivalry and scramble for power which dominated the lives of the Continental Kings and Princes from 1500-1750, and how the reformation caused Kingdoms to change hands with alarming regularity. The talk will also cover how knowledge of the context can help form a distinguished collection, and how the modern collector must be both patient and determined.
